South Sudan could be on the brink of the world's worst-ever humanitarian crisis, warn the various organizations of the United Nations (UN).

Edem Wosornu, director of operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said that the country is possibly on its way to having the worst hunger crisis in the world.

"Our humanitarian partners estimate that some 222,000 children could die of malnutrition in the coming weeks and months," Wosornu warned.

The UN reports that violence in South Sudan increased by 35% in the last quarter of 2023, due to inter-community conflicts.

"A humanitarian crisis is taking place in Sudan under a veil of international inaction and inattention. Simply put, we are failing the people of Sudan," he acknowledged.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) recorded 233 incidents of violence affecting 862 people. The new report confirmed 406 dead, 293 wounded and 100 abducted, as well as 63 people subjected to conflict-related sexual violence.

According to the survey, violence committed by community militias or civil defense groups accounted for 86% of the cases in which civilians were affected.
