Startup Will Make Algae-Based Clothes

The Israeli startup, Algaeing, aims to create biodegradable, non-toxic and energy-efficient clothing, all based on algae. The formula, with low water consumption, in addition to reducing costs, can be used to create natural fibers and dyes, without creating waste and polluting the environment.

According to Renana Krebs, CEO and co-founder of Algaeing, the idea is to "harness the energy of renewable algae to create a real and genuine impact against climate change."

Algatech is the company, also Israeli, that supplies the raw material, grown in seawater in "vertical farms" that run on solar energy.

They go through a conversion process to their liquid form and from there can become dye or fabric when combined with cellulose.

The startup intends to migrate to a different supply chain than today, and its patented technology should hit the market as early as next year.

This technique should reduce water consumption by about 80%, considering that cotton for a conventional T-shirt needs up to 2,700 liters of fresh water to be ready. This is equivalent to what a human being needs for a lifetime, according to the World Wide Fund For Nature.

On the other hand, working with algae will significantly reduce the absorption of chemical components by humans.

Currently, algae-based fibers are more expensive than conventional fibers such as cotton.

Algaeing received the 2018 H&M Foundation Global Change Award.
