Sofala: Fire causes explosion of military devices in Inhamízua

Sofala: Incêndio provoca explosão de engenhos militares em Inhamízua

A fire caused by uncontrolled burning led to explosions of military devices, the noise of which panicked the residents of the Mobeira area, in the Inhamízua neighborhood.

The fire started in an agricultural field in the Mungassa district, and due to the change in wind direction the flames spread to an area that once served as a storage area for the Mozambique Armed Defense Forces (FADM), according to "Notícias."

According to the publication, the fire hit an unspecified number of explosive devices, including mines and shells.

The area of the old armory remains protected to this day and is not frequented by the population.

The spokesman for the National Public Salvation Service (SENSAP) in Sofala, Fernando Meque, said that there had been a great deal of carelessness on the part of the owners of the agricultural field, which had led to the flames spreading.

"The flames ended up spreading there. It's an area reserved for the FADM and, during the armed conflicts, many of these devices were deployed in that area. There are even signs so that there is no invasion, but in this case, the person was unable to control the fire and it reached the space," he explained, as quoted by the newspaper.

The source said that SENSAP was activated and, working together with the PRM and the FADM, it was possible to extinguish the flames.
