More than 150,000 people are in urgent need of food support in Sofala, Maringue district, a government source said.
The situation is so complicated that several families, especially in the towns of Gumbalaçai and Senga-senga, are feeding on wild fruit and tubers, writes Rádio Moçambique.
Thousands of other families have even had to leave their homes and go to the neighboring districts of Tambara and Machaze, in the province of Manica, to escape the famine.
According to the administrator of Marínguè, Maria Pulseira , the shortage of food in the district is a problem caused by drought, due to the El Niño phenomenon
The source explained that the supplies recently made available by the government, through the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) for those affected, were insufficient and reinforcements are on the way.
