The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is holding an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government in Harare today to address security issues in the region.
A Mozambican delegation led by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, is at the scene.
Contrary to national expectations about the possibility of discussing the current socio-political situation in Mozambique, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation warned that the topic was not on the agenda.
Cited by Radio MozambiqueManuel Gonçalves said that this afternoon's summit had been called to assess the political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the meantime, he said that the President of the Republic could bring up the issue if there was room to do so.
"From the outset, an analysis of the situation in Mozambique was never on the agenda of this extraordinary summit. So, from the very beginning, this summit was called to analyze the situation in the DRC. In the meantime, His Excellency the PR of Mozambique is here. His Excellency the PR of Mozambique is here, he will be able to share with his peers about the situation in the country"
He explained that it is customary to convene this type of summit to examine a single point. This one will decide whether or not to renew the SAMIM DRC Military Mission.
"In May 2023, the SADC summit in Namibia decided to send a SADC Mission to the DRC, called SAMIM DRC. And in December, the Mission started its activities in the DRC for a period of one year. This means that it will end in December of this year. Because of this, this extraordinary summit is being held to evaluate the work done so far, and to take the appropriate decision on whether or not to renew it. This is the fundamental objective of this Extraordinary Summit," he said.
