The situation of child victims of terrorist attacks, including those who have been recruited and used as child soldiers, is worrying in Mozambique. The position was taken by the government which is providing assistance to children in Cabo Delgado province.
"Grave" is how the national director of children in the ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action, Angélica Magaia, considers the situation of children in Cabo Delgado province, the target of terrorist attacks since 2017.
"We are coordinating assistance for a little over four thousand child victims of this armed conflict and 60 % of these children are girls. We speak of victims because all those who come to the services to provide our assistance, we treat them as victims, including the children who have been used for this armed conflict," said Angélica Magaia.
For social activist Graça Machel it is urgent to help these children by reinserting them into the education system.
"The sooner we do this, we will take the most important step toward reintegrating the children. In the meantime, we will identify those who need special care. Then those who need special care will be able to be referred to special programs," Graça Machel said.
The concerns were expressed at the Forum on Child Rights: Situation of children affected by armed conflict. The event was organized by the Mozambican Ministry of Defense and UNICEF, as part of the international day against the use of child soldiers.
