The leader of the Mozambique Democratic Movement, Lutero Simango, says that the election results released today do not reflect the will of the people.
Simango says that if electoral legality is not restored, he will opt for the "generalized mobilization of the electoral revolt, like the one we are seeing in Maputo City".
The presidential candidate was speaking after the release of the results of the National Electoral Commission, which gave victory to Daniel Chapo and his Frelimo party,
"A number of polling station presidents were illegally appointed with the clear aim of manipulating the results in their respective polling stations to benefit the ruling party," Simango denounced.
"Faced with this scenario, Simango says that "only two possibilities remain: the restoration of legality or the widespread mobilization of the electoral revolt as we are seeing in the city of Maputo."
However, Simango says that it is up to the Constitutional Council to restore electoral legality.
If not, "the first step is to promote a forensic audit. We need to check the ballot papers of all the polling stations in their entirety and the respective minutes and notices," he said.
The last case, in Simango's view, is to repeat the elections on the basis of the law and correct the illegalities found. For this reason, the Constitutional Council has a responsibility to make the process credible by complying with the law and the popular will expressed at the ballot box.
