In a year in which the South could be the target of the El Niño phenomenon, according to INAM, the government will invest 47 million dollars to mitigate the impacts of drought in the arid and semi-arid areas of the South of the country.
According to RM, the money is being used to build 20 excavated reservoirs and 15 multifunctional boreholes, with funding from the African Development Bank.
The national director for the Development of Arid and Semi-Arid Zones, Paulo Tomás, said that the projects would benefit around 500,000 people.
The source also said that they will be built in the districts of Magude, Moamba and Marracuene, in Maputo province; Guijá, Chicualacuala, Mapai and Massangena, in Gaza province; and Mabote, Funhalouro and Panda, in Inhambane province.
The information was released last Saturday (17) as part of the celebrations for World Day to Combat Drought and Desertification.
