SADC Extends Military Mission in Cabo Delgado

SADC prorroga missão militar em Cabo Delgado

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Military Mission, SAMIM will continue in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado by decision of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community which ended on Wednesday, 17, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement, the Angolan Foreign Ministry said the 42nd Summit analyzed the report on the security situation in Cabo Delgado and "approved the extension of the mandate of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) and the relevant related processes.

The note does not indicate the deadline for extending the mission, whose previous extension ended on Monday, the 15th.

On July 14, an extraordinary SADC summit considered SAMIM to have achieved "significant achievements and milestones" in the fight against "terrorism," hailed the countries that supported the mission, and "extended condolences to the governments and families of the nine SAMIM personnel who lost their lives in the theater of operations."

The summit reviewed ongoing reforms in Lesotho and saw the changing of the guard in leadership, with South African Head of State Cyril Ramaphosa handing over the rotating SADC chairmanship to his counterpart Felix Tshisekedi for one year.

Within 12 months, the Angolan Head of State will assume the presidency of the community.
