Russia donates products to the victims of the attacks in Cabo Delgado

The Russian embassy on Tuesday donated more than seven tons of goods to the Mozambique Red Cross to support victims of armed violence in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.

"This gesture shows that also Russian companies express their solidarity with the people of Mozambique. [The business sector] decided to make an additional gesture to the fulfillment of their social obligations and offer a little more help," said Alexander Súrikov, Russia's ambassador to Mozambique, during the delivery of the donations in Maputo.

For the ambassador, the donations, consisting of food and clothing, also serve to "show and confirm once again" that Russia is "close to the people" of Mozambique.

The Red Cross thanked him for the gesture, and pledged to extend support to displaced people fleeing attacks by armed groups in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.

"We knocked on many doors, and one of them was the embassy. We have here, today, the materialization of what was our appeal", said Avelino Mondlane, president of the Mozambique Red Cross.

Armed groups have terrorized the province since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the 'jihadist' group Islamic State, in a wave of violence that has led to more than 2,800 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and 732,000 displaced people, according to the UN.
