Russia has again given an ultimatum to the Ukrainian military that is holding the gates of Mariupol. The city has until this Wednesday afternoon to surrender all weapons and surrender, reveals the "Reuters", quoted by the newspaper Economic.
Vladimir Putin's country has been struggling to conquer the port city since the beginning of the invasion, as it proves crucial to the entire conquest of the eastern Ukrainian border.
However, the surrender request comes at a time when the West has pledged more weapons and military aid to Ukraine.
The Russians have tried several times to advance on what they now consider to be the 'Battle of the Donbas'. Throughout the eight-week invasion, Russian troops have used artillery and missiles to destroy the port city in an attempt to get citizens to leave Mariupol.
After spreading several failed attacks on Ukrainian cities, the Russians were forced to pull back and concentrate their efforts on a single city of interest: Mariupol. Thus, the Russians keep their eyes set on the Ukrainian east for their full conquest, since they already have Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea.
"AFP" this morning quoted a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry that five Ukrainian servicemen had surrendered. "Five Ukrainian servicemen have laid down their arms and voluntarily left the Azovstal plant," the Russian ministry wrote.
A defense line of Ukrainians is known to be barricaded in the Azovstal metallurgical complex, a location considered strategic because of the possibility of escape routes and the existence of underground bunkers.
After three days without active humanitarian corridors, Ukraine announced plans to send 90 buses to evacuate 6,000 civilians, mostly women and children, from the destroyed city. The Ukrainians even talked a "preliminary agreement" with Russia to have the corridor open this Wednesday.
