The doors of the Renamo party headquarters reopened in Maputo this Saturday (21), after a group of former guerrillas declared the closure of the premises. The group is demanding a National Council to elect a new leadership.
The group of former guerrillas had already submitted two letters of protest, calling for a National Council to be held to elect a new leadership as a result of the election result.
According to a VOAThe former guerrillas asked the provincial and district delegations to also close the doors of the party's headquarters. Disturbances between Ossufo's supporters and the ex-guerrillas were reported in several localities.
For example, in Manica, a group of members and sympathizers of Renamo, the largest opposition party in Mozambique, got into a scuffle in front of their provincial delegation building in the city of Chimoio, resulting in two people being slightly injured.
In Nampula, a group of Renamo members and sympathizers, who were at their provincial headquarters in Nampula, assaulted three journalists who were covering a press conference called by the party's Communication and Image Office.
According to the results of the October 9 elections, Renamo lost its position as the country's second political force, a position held by the presidential candidate supported by the PODEMOS party, Venâncio Mondlane.
Renamo has not yet made any statements. There is still no date for the National Council as, according to the party, there are not enough funds and the election results have not yet been certified.
Ossufo Momade has been Renamo's leader since 2018.
The elections have sparked a wave of protests in Mozambique. The country is now awaiting the pronouncement of the Constitutional Council, which has announced that it will rule tomorrow, Monday (23).
