Renamo questions alleged lack of resources for elections and asks if PR pursues third term

Renamo questiona alegada falta de recursos para eleições e pergunta se PR persegue terceiro mandato

Renamo, the main opposition party in the country, says the alleged lack of money for the next election cycle is a trial attempt to postpone district elections or force a third term for the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.

This position comes after the National Elections Commission (CNE) revealed a deficit of 2.2 billion meticais, and so far, has not received any guarantee from the Government to make up for it.

The CNE complains about the lack of funds to carry out the various activities foreseen in the electoral process, but the Renamo spokesman says that Mozambique, as a democratic state, cannot vilify the Constitution of the Republic, at the whim of a particular group.

José Manteigas adds to VOA that "the government still hasn't gone to Parliament to say that it has no money to hold elections, and we don't know on what basis someone from CNE appears to say that there is no money.

The spokesman points out that "in addition," the topic of elections has been coming up since 2018, and the ruling party knew that in 2023 we would have municipal elections and in 2024 general and district elections, and we are prepared to go to the ballot."

For Manteigas, "this whole plot is an attempt to rehearse, or to postpone the district elections, or to pull a third term for President Nyusi, which is contrary to our constitutional regime that is of two terms only for the President of the Republic."

However, for Fernando Faustino, secretary-general of the Association of Combatants of the Armed National Liberation Struggle (ACLIN), one of Frelimo's very influential social organizations, this is not Filipe Nyusi's concern.

According to Faustino, "President Nyusi's concern is not third or fourth term, his concern is to end the insurgents in Cabo Delgado, with hunger and the cost of living, at no time has he expressed this interest."

In some circles of opinion, it is said to hope that this corresponds to the truth because the country has to move forward in a democratic way and that is what it needs to develop.
