Renamo appeals to CNE over fraud during voter registration

Renamo interpõe recurso à CNE por fraudes durante o recenseamento eleitoral

The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party in Mozambique, has submitted an appeal to the National Electoral Commission (CNE) over alleged fraud in the voter registration process.

According to the Center for Public Integrity (CIP), the issue is the movement of voter registration machines (mobiles ID's); the registration of voters outside the time set by the CNE; the registration of voters using data received or collected by telephone; the refusal of brigade members to provide data to opposition inspectors on the grounds that they were obeying superior orders; and the transportation of people not resident in the municipal radius to register in the Matola municipal area.

Renamo submitted the appeal to the CNE after it was not answered by the Maputo Provincial Electoral Commission within five days, as established by law for political parties.

During voter registration, Renamo submitted 102 complaints to the Matola City STAE and appeals to the District and Provincial Electoral Commissions.

CIP reveals, citing Renamo documents submitted to the Public Prosecutor's Office, that the mobiles picked up by STAE in the city of Matola for allegedly breaking down were being used in the dead of night to register voters.

For example, the IFP mobile registered 221 voters in three days. "The mobile in block 22, in Bairro da Matola "C", registered 25 voters until 3pm, when it was collected by STAE technicians. The following day it returned with 78 registered voters, plus 53 voters registered outside the electoral registration office. This machine worked from 8.56 am until 11.26 pm," reads a CIP document.
