The formation of a political coalition seems to be the solution found between the two largest opposition parties in Mozambique, the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) to overthrow the ruling party, Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo).
The idea of Renamo President Ossufo Momade and MDM President Lutero Simango is to get the largest number of votes during the municipal and presidential elections of 2023 and 2024, respectively.
The party leaders, quoted by DW, say that the decision on the formation of the political alliance will be decided by the bodies of each party, and this union would not be limited to these two parties.
Ossufo Momade said that a consultation with the population is already underway to find out which way to go. "We are doing this follow-up. I accept what comes out of the party organs, because I am not a dictator.
Simango also referred the decision to "the party's [human] capital," but said that the MDM "is prepared to govern Mozambique, as are the municipalities."
The political analyst, Ismael Mussá, heard by STV considers that Mozambique still does not have a strong candidate to deal with Frelimo, even if a coalition is created. In his opinion, due to ideological issues of each party, the best is to "experiment with coalitions at the level of municipalities" to see how their management will be, and only then take a bigger step.
"But if there is a coalition, naturally, it would not be "Renamo-MDM", it would be "Renamo União Eleitoral", because Renamo has a relative advantage at the moment," he said, still considering that "it would be much healthier if there was an equal treatment." To bring down the ruling party, this "depends a lot on the strategists who make [the coalition].
