The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) considered today that a possible postponement of the district elections disrespects the understandings between the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, and the late party leader Afonso Dhlakama, within the framework of the peace agreements.
"Not to hold the district elections is to disrespect the memory of the late president Afonso Dhlakama, with whom Filipe Nyusi came to an understanding, accepting the holding of the first district elections as an instrument for consolidating the decentralization process," said the party's leader, Ossufo Momade, during a statement to the media today in Maputo and quoted by Lusa.
At issue are the Mozambican head of state's calls for reflection and debate on the feasibility of moving ahead next year with the election of administrators for the 154 districts, currently appointed by the central government.
For Renamo, the legislative changes that set 2024 as the date for the first district elections were the result of understandings between Filipe Nyusi and Afonso Dhlakama, the Renamo leader who lost his life in 2018, in the middle of the negotiation process with the President of the Republic.
