The secretary general of Renamo, the main opposition party, assured today that the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process of the organization's armed arm is moving towards its end, acknowledging the complexity of the operation.
"The DDR process is complex, but the important thing is that we are moving toward the end," André Majibire said during a party roundtable in Maputo.
Majibire revealed that last week another base of Renamo armed men was closed in Montepuez district, Cabo Delgado province, north of the country, but there was "no publicity, due to the terrorism situation."
The politician acknowledged that the "sluggishness" is due to setbacks caused by needs for correction.
He called on all political actors and Mozambican society to commit to peacekeeping, stressing the importance of respecting political freedoms and sharing economic opportunities.
Note that the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement was signed by President Filipe Nyuusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade in August 2019. It provided among other things for the DDR of the armed arm of the main opposition party.
Under DDR, 12 of the 16 Renamo bases have already been deactivated and 68% of the party's approximately five thousand guerrillas have been demobilized.
