Renamo leader Ossufo Momade called on the Mozambican population, political parties, religious denominations, civil society, the international community and academics to unite in the defense of democracy in the country.
The appeal was made during a press conference in Maputo, in reaction to the results of the general elections, recently validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council.
Momade expressed the party's dissatisfaction with the election results, saying he didn't recognize the winner or the figures presented.
He emphasized the need to be guided by justice and patriotism, above partisan or individual interests, and highlighted Renamo's role in guaranteeing the preservation of democracy.
The Renamo leader, whose leadership these days has been contested by the party's former guerrillas, described the Constitutional Council's decision as a betrayal of the nation.
He also accused the body of failing in its mission to protect the integrity of the democratic system by ignoring allegations of electoral fraud and manipulation.
Momade said that the Constitutional Council had become a tool of oppression, disrespecting the electoral truth.
He criticized the Council's stance, saying that its members showed a profound disrespect for truth and justice, and should be held accountable for their connivance and omission.
He promised to mobilize efforts to demand accountability and protect the legitimacy of the country's democratic system.
Momade called on everyone to reflect on the type of society they want for the future and the legacy to be left for the next generations, stressing that the Constitutional Council's decision puts the future of the nation at risk. (Source: MMO)
