RENAMO boycotts swearing-in of AR deputies

RENAMO boicota tomada de posse de deputados da AR

RENAMO has decided to boycott the swearing-in of its deputies tomorrow in the Assembly of the Republic, the spokesman for the political group announced on Sunday.

"The RENAMO party believes that this ceremony is devoid of any solemn value and therefore constitutes a social outrage and disrespect for the will of Mozambicans, so it will not be part of this inauguration ceremony," said Marcial Macome.

The spokesman explained that the electoral results that legitimize the next composition of the Assembly of the Republic do not reflect the popular will "which necessarily involves holding free, fair and transparent elections".

For RENAMO, which lost its status as the largest opposition party in parliament, the results proclaimed by the Constitutional Council "are administrative".

"Right from the start, the RENAMO party presented its position on these results. The party believed that the best way of pacifying and overcoming electoral disputes necessarily involved annulling the results. And, in its opinion, it doesn't make sense for it to seize administrative seats at the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow," he said.

On the other hand, the party urges Mozambican society to use all peaceful means at its disposal to restore electoral justice.
