"Renamo has distanced itself from the people and needs to reconcile with its base" - Ivan Mazanga

“Renamo afastou-se do povo e precisa de reconciliar-se com as suas bases” – Ivan Mazanga

The president of the Renamo Youth League, Ivan Mazanga, believes that Renamo has distanced itself from the people and needs to reconcile with its grassroots. "We need to look inside ourselves, with honesty, and do what needs to be done. Without the people, today we are number three and tomorrow we could be nothing," warned Mazanga at the opening of the 2nd Ordinary Session of the National Council in Nampula.

For Ivan Mazanga, only an Extraordinary Congress can rescue the party from the current political and structural crisis. Quoted by Rigo newspaperr, the young leader called for the courage to make "surgical and bold" decisions that would restore the electorate's confidence.

"Our party is in tears, but this National Council can restore the hope of Mozambicans, particularly the youth," he said.

For the youth leader, the 2024 election results represented one of the worst moments in the party's history. "The elections were a total disaster. Today Renamo is the third political and electoral force. This is unacceptable for an organization with our historical dimension," he criticized.

On the occasion, Mazanga also called for unity, but rejected internal exclusions, arguing that the fight against the regime can only be done with inclusion. "In the struggle for change there are no useless or expendable people. As long as this struggle continues, there must be no room for resentment," he said.

Between Ossufo Momade's call for cohesion and the youth's clamor for an Extraordinary Congress, the National Council in Nampula exposed the different visions for Renamo's future: wait until 2029 or move forward now with profound changes to rescue the party.
