RENAMO accuses Quelimane town council of embezzling 86 million meticais

RENAMO acusa edilidade de Quelimane de desviar 86 milhões de meticais

On Friday, the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) caucus in the Municipal Assembly (AM) of Quelimane, in Zambezia province, accused the municipality of embezzling around 86,733.846.15 meticais.

By lodging the complaint, the party was demonstrating its disagreement with the information contained in the 2024 Balance Sheet Report, presented by the Administration and Finance council.

The councillor said that the allegation was untrue.

The Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) has questioned the origin of the funds for Manuel de Araújo's recurrent trips abroad. The city council's accounts show travel expenses - when, if at all, a member of the AM has traveled on a service mission - and D'Araújo claims that his trips are supported by partners who invite him, according to FRELIMO.

The Mayor, Manuel de Araújo, elected by RENAMO, attended the session, but did not make any explanatory comments on the allegation of embezzlement. He did, however, promise to explain the situation when the time came.

However, the document, quoted by Diário da ZambéziaThe report, which was published in the Official Gazette, shows that last year, national and international travel by the municipality's staff cost the city's coffers close to 10 million meticais. This amount will have covered airfare and subsistence allowances.
