The inquiry report into the production of the recent statue of Eduardo Mondlane - the architect of national unity - is not to the government's liking, according to the Minister of Education and Culture.
"The report is [ready], but it needs to be presented for it to be a consensus... it's for us to discuss here to see how we're going to position ourselves in the face of the report that exists.... We're not very happy with it, but it's ready," said Samaria Tovela on Wednesday.
According to the official, the document needs to be analyzed and debated by all the structures in the city of Maputo, where the statue is located, in order to reach a consensus.
She said, however, that the artwork could be rehabilitated, but the decision would have to be made by the institution's Coordinating Council.
"We're going to fix the statue this year. We need to recondition the existing one. Then we'll give the feedback on how we should conduct the process. The coordinating council is to reach a consensus on this matter," she said, quoted by TV Sucesso.
The statue of Eduardo Mondlane was presented to the public on September 25, 2024, by the former President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi. The statue was contested at national level for being disproportionate.
On October 3, 2024, the then Minister of Culture, Eldevina Materula, announced the creation of a technical team of national and foreign experts to re-evaluate the object, which had cost the state coffers around 22 million meticais.
