UK and Sweden inject 192 million meticals for renewable energies in Mozambique

This Wednesday, May 17, the governments of the United Kingdom and Sweden signed an agreement to inject 2.4 million pounds, the equivalent of more than 192 million Meticais, into Mozambique's renewable energy program, which has been underway since 2019 and is scheduled to end in 2024, covering 1.9 million people.

Access to electricity has not yet reached 50% of the Mozambican population and the government's goal is to bring energy to the entire population by 2030. Renewable energies are one of the keys to achieving this goal.

The British government has said that it is supporting Mozambique in the development of climate change-resistant infrastructure, as well as the energy transition.

For his part, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy reiterated in his speech that the country is committed to bringing electricity to the people and, to this end, also has the support of its partners.

"The nationwide Energy for All Program provides access to electricity for all Mozambican families still without access to electricity. Through a presidential initiative, all administrative posts will have electricity by 2024, allowing access to electricity to increase from 35% to 60% by 2024 and 10 million Mozambicans to have electricity for the first time," said Carlos Zacarias, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, quoted by the newspaper O País.

The money is for the "Shine" program, which is being implemented throughout the country and has already benefited 1.3 million people with access to electricity and heat.
