LAM's revenues are already close to pre-covid levels, says CEO

Receitas da LAM já estão próximas dos níveis pré-covid, garante Director-geral

The Director General of Mozambique Airlines (LAM), João Carlos Pó Jorge, guarantees that the company's traffic and revenues are already close to pre-covid levels, thanks to the ongoing restructuring process.

"In terms of traffic, we're already practically at pre-Covid 2019 levels. Revenue is at that level. Obviously, workers are better prepared now for these challenges that aviation brings," she said today in Ricatlha, Marracuene, where the 58th edition of the Maputo International Fair (FACIM) is taking place.

He was speaking in an interview with Televisão de Moçambique, and although he didn't specify the figures in question, he acknowledged the impact of covid-19 on the company's financial situation, and that it wasn't all thorns.

"[Covid-19] has given us the strength to take this new step, for which we are already reaching the same pre-covid levels," he said.

He said that the focus of the restructuring in the company is to create facilities for the greatest number of people to subscribe to the company's services.

"That's what we've been focusing on: reducing fares, improving services for domestic and international tourism. We're already seeing some results. Tourist destinations are becoming more accepted. We recently reopened Johannesburg-Vilanculos, and the flight is taking on positive characteristics in terms of cabin occupancy," he said.

Pó Jorge highlighted the (re)opening of routes as one of the main factors in the recovery of the company's accounts. "We've resumed [domestic] routes, continental routes and we want to resume intercontinental routes. We're working on the route to Lisbon, and we're well on our way."
