The Mozambican ambassador to the Vatican and former leader of Renamo, the main opposition party, Raul Domingos, on Friday pointed to the lack of a "culture of democracy" as a factor in the country's wars, advocating inclusion and reconciliation for effective peace.
Speaking by videoconference from the Vatican in Rome, during a conference on peace and reconciliation, held in Maputo on the occasion of the launch of the magazine "Agora", the former Renamo leader said that: "it is a culture of democracy that we lack and that always creates conflicts".
For Raul Domingos, who was chief negotiator for the Renamo delegation in the talks with the government for the 1992 General Peace Agreement, he said that the country has failed in national reconciliation, referring to the accusations in parliament among MPs about the blame for the 16-year civil war.
"In the Assembly of the Republic, there are times when we lose focus, we stop discussing the agenda, to discuss who killed [during the civil war], who destroyed [property], this is a lack of a culture of reconciliation, dialogue and mutual acceptance," he said.
Meanwhile, the source defended the imperative of political, social, economic and cultural inclusion among Mozambicans, emphasizing his unprecedented appointment as ambassador in August 2022 as an important and significant step on the road to reconciliation.
