"Kidnappings in Mozambique call for in-depth investigation" - defend authorities

“Raptos em Moçambique clamam por investigação profunda” – defendem autoridades

Another businessman of Indian origin was kidnapped on Wednesday morning (26) in Maputo, a fact that once again highlights the need for a more thorough investigation into why this community is always the victim of this crime.

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) and the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) report the sophistication of this organized crime as the main difficulty in clarifying these crimes, which have been going on in the country for more than 12 years.

Once again, the police went to the scene and the PRM spokesman in Maputo city, Leonel Muchima, said that the case "is being investigated for clarification".

This is yet another case involving a Mozambican businessman of Asian origin, which is why the community, without giving its face, is annoyed by the occurrence of these cases.

However, quoted by VOAArlindo Guilamba, a lawyer and political analyst, believes that it is necessary to investigate why traders of Asian origin are often involved in order to clarify this type of crime, "not to rule out a settling of accounts, but we have no evidence to that effect".

From January 2023 to March 2024, the PRM and the National Criminal Investigation Service recorded nine cases of kidnapping that were completed and six that were thwarted. However, Leonel Muchina recognizes that investigating these crimes "is difficult due to their typical nature".

Every year, PGR Beatriz Buchile reports in her annual report on the difficulties in investigating this crime and the modernization of the modus operandi by its perpetrators.
