The South African President said that his government is ready and willing to support Mozambique if the post-election unrest continues, without giving further details on how this intervention would take place.
According to a VOA publication quoting the South African portal EWN, in Cape Town, during a Progressive Business Forum of the African National Congress, Cyril Ramaphosa said he was undecided about his participation in Daniel Chapo's inauguration ceremony on Wednesday (15) in Maputo.
"As members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) we are ready, willing and able to give them all the support we can so that they can overcome the challenges they face and we hope that the inauguration on January 15 goes well and that they have our full support in every way possible," he told journalists, stressing that "we are watching very closely what is happening in Mozambique and, obviously, it is a very close neighbor of ours, a very good trading partner.
Last week, the non-governmental organizations Plataforma Decide and Consórcio Mais Integridade wrote a letter to Cyril Ramaphosa asking him to intervene to help find a solution to the Mozambican crisis.
In the letter, the associations reiterate their call for peace, but also ask Ramaphosa to request that judicial proceedings be opened before the African Court and the International Criminal Court against the Commander General of the Police, the Minister of the Interior and the state for the crimes against humanity committed during the protests.
