If the presidential elections were to take place now in Portugal, António Guterres and António Costa could be ahead in the race. At least that's the conclusion of an Intercampus poll for Negócios, Correio da Manhã and CMTV, which places the two socialists in the top positions among the ranking of possible presidential candidates.
At this distance - the elections won't take place until 2026 - there are still no candidates or clear favorites, and the preferences of those polled are very divided. Even so, the UN Secretary-General stands out, with 15.1% of voting intentions, followed by the current Prime Minister (who has rejected the possibility of trying to run for Belém), with 14.3%.
In third place is former Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, who was in first place in the last Intercampus poll and remains the right's favorite name for this electoral battle.
PS avoids rushing into presidential elections and calculates Santos Silva's risks
André Ventura and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Henrique Gouveia e Melo, come next in this poll. Both Luís Marques Mendes and Paulo Portas, two right-wing figures often mentioned as candidates for Belém, only appear much further down the list of respondents' preferences.
The same goes for the most talked about name in the PS for this scenario, that of the current President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, who doesn't get any further than 1.4% in this opinion poll.
