Mozambicans today learned the results of the October 9 elections, which will then have to be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council. The announcement of the results comes after PODEMOS presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane called for a demonstration and strike in repudiation of electoral fraud.
According to CNE spokesman Paulo Cuinica, the election results will be announced at 3:30 p.m. at the Joaquim Chissano International Congress Center in Maputo.
According to the provisional results, Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, won the poll with more than 60% of the votes.
However, Venâncio Mondlane says that these results do not correspond to what the people voted for on October 9. "They are not what the people voted for, they are deeply false," he said last Saturday.
According to the figures released last night by the Electoral Bulletin of the Center for Public Integrity (CIP), Frelimo managed to win 193 seats in the national territory and the two seats available in the diaspora. PODEMOS, the party supporting Venâncio Mondlane's candidacy for President of the Republic, is in second place with 31 seats, followed by Renamo with 20 seats, while MDM closes the list with four deputies.
