Snowfall forces road closures and land border closures in South Africa

This Saturday (21), the Border Management Authority ordered the closure of some of the entry points into South Africa, due to persistent snowfall.

A publication by Radio MozambiqueIn response to the situation, the South African authorities have ordered the closure of all land borders linking South Africa and Lesotho until further notice.

"The persistent snowfall in these areas has made them very risky for travelers," says the same publication.

To this end, the South African meteorological services also raised the alert level for the province of Kwazulu-Natal to eight on Saturday, in view of the bad weather caused by snowfall accompanied by rain.

According to the authorities, road number three (N3), which connects the cities of Johannesburg and Durban, is practically impassable due to the ice covering the asphalt, making it difficult for vehicles to move.

"Many drivers are stranded on the roads and in addition to help with fuel and food, they fear for their own safety, especially in this darkness," reads the same publication, noting that multidisciplinary teams have been mobilized and are distributing food and blankets to those affected.

In Kwazulu Natal, the heavy snowfall also affected essential services, including water and electricity, in several communities.
