Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda said last week in Parliament that the authorities had recorded only one death in the context of 130 popular demonstrations across most of the country against electoral fraud.
He was referring to the case of a member of the Renamo party who was murdered by the police of the Republic of Mozambique in the district of Chiúre, in the south of Cabo Delgado province.
Meanwhile, the electoral bulletin of the Center for Public Integrity says that Minister Ronda has hidden data on other killings in the same social context. "The minister's statistics hide around half a dozen murders in Nampula City and Nacala-Porto," it reads.
Four of the cases were registered in the city of Nampula, of which CIP eleições confirmed two, a 14-year-old minor and a 27-year-old. Another two were registered and confirmed in Nacala-Porto, where the PRM murdered two citizens, a shopkeeper and a 17-year-old teenager.
"All these deaths are not part of the minister's statistics, and consequently the state's, because they were victims of the state itself," the bulletin concludes.
