The first of the seven days of demonstrations was quite violent, especially in the neighborhoods of Maxaquene, Luís Cabral, 25 de Junho and Hulene, all in the city of Maputo. The result was the vandalization and burning of Frelimo party headquarters in the Maxaquene district. In the district of Gilé, in Zambézia, a Frelimo headquarters, a statue and two homes of police officers were destroyed. It is confirmed that 12 people were shot in Nacala-Porto, Nampula province, and Gilé, Zambézia.
At the time of writing, most of the roads into the Maxaquene neighborhood and part of Avenida Joaquim Chissano were blocked. The police are beginning to show signs of fatigue, which is reducing the number of shots fired. The helicopter that flew over and fired tear gas is no longer seen.
Yesterday, in Maputo City, protesters set up three gates along Avenida da Malhangalene, which gives access to the circle committees of Maxaquene B (Círculo da Graça) and Maxaquene C (next to Lar Nossa Senhora dos Desamparados, which houses abandoned elderly people). The gates were designed to make it difficult for the defense and security forces to access the places targeted for vandalization.
On another avenue nearby (Vladimir Lenin), two gates were set up, which also made alternative access to the two Frelimo party headquarters difficult. We were unable to ascertain the location of the third headquarters that was set on fire, but the act was confirmed by the police.
Once the roads were blocked, vandalism began on the headquarters of the Frelimo party, which put its members in a situation of insecurity since they live in the same neighborhood. Some influential Frelimo members in the neighborhoods are considering leaving because of the insecurity, but so far they are not the main targets, not least because they are well-known and to some extent respected families, which prevents them from being targeted by the demonstrations.
In Matola, the most critical neighborhoods are T3, Patrício and Muhalaze, along the Maputo ring road. The Maputo ring road, in the area of the first traffic circle, is blocked and tires are being burned.
In Pebane, in the province of Zambézia, the protesters, who were not quantified, marched to the headquarters of the Frelimo party. They vandalized it, destroyed Frelimo party meeting centers, two statues erected in front of the party's District Committee and the OJM. During the vandalizing of Frelimo infrastructure, eight citizens were shot, two fatally and six wounded. The dead are two minors, aged 14 and 17 respectively.
During the vandalization of the headquarters, two police officers shot six citizens, one of whom was seriously injured and had to be transferred to Quelimane Central Hospital.
According to our findings, during the same demonstrations, the house of the head of operations of the Rapid Intervention Unit and a member of the Protection Police were vandalized. (CIP Eleições)
