A 66-year-old man is accused of leading a gang of five who robbed and beat up a healer and his wife in the Ribáuè district of Nampula. He and another subordinate are already in the hands of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
In addition to the assault on the healer and his wife, which left the victims with serious injuries, the criminals took 200,000 meticais. The healer is the main supplier of agricultural products.
SERNIC says that Grandpa leads a gang of five, and that the other three members have yet to be found.
The authority says that it decided to expose the case, firstly because it involved an elderly man, which is "quite worrying", and secondly because he had beaten up the healer.
"He could have been at home advising his children, but he chose to lead a gang of robbers. That's worrying at his age. So it's more of a wake-up call and an appeal to society," said Elina Tsinine, SERNIC's spokesperson in Nampula.
The grandfather, who claims to be a trader at Waresta market, on the outskirts of Nampula, and his subordinate confessed to the crimes. However, they claim they were invited by a third party.
