The non-governmental organizations AMEND and Strang Rennies, in partnership with the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) and the Road Transport Institute (INATRO), are carrying out awareness campaigns for pedestrians, motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and alcohol consumers in restaurants, bars and bottle shops in Maputo province today and tomorrow.
According to the organizations, which began raising awareness on the 10th of this month, the festive season is the time when the highest number of accidents on the roads occurs.
Key messages about road accident prevention are made known to the public through cultural events, digital media and interpersonal contact.
Tichel Cossa, representing the AMEND Association, said that the safety measures are known to everyone, but that the messages need to be reinforced "because at some point, because of the urgency or haste we have during the festive season, we rush to be here or there and end up forgetting these rules. So we're here to remind everyone, to wish them happy holidays, that we're going to party, but safely, especially on public roads."
Quoted by the newspaper Notícias, Cossa justified the choice of supermarkets and petrol stations for the dissemination of the messages "because it's a time when people have more time to interact and read the messages we've been sharing," he explained.
"Essentially, we remind people that they should rest whenever they are tired, that they should never forget their seatbelt. Many young people 'mute' the seat belt and sit on top of it. We also remind them that the combination of alcohol and driving does not have good results," he said.
