Ombudsman criticizes excessive use of police force and calls for compliance with the law

Provedor de Justiça critica o uso excessivo da força policial e apela a observância da lei

The Ombudsman, Isaque Chande, criticized today, Wednesday (17), the excessive use of police force to contain the post-election demonstrations, calling on the demonstrators to observe the law.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the Human Rights Commission and the Public Ethics Commission, Isaque Chande began by condemning the actions of the police during the demonstrations taking place in the country since the announcement of the election results by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), stressing that: "the police, in some of these situations, have to intervene with their force, albeit proportionally".

"It is our duty to call for the law to be respected by both the demonstrators and the police. We regret this excessive use of force, but the police have to intervene in cases where it is justified. In justified cases, the police must intervene, but in a proportional way to preserve the property and physical integrity of the demonstrators. No to deaths that could have been avoided," said the ombudsman.

On the same occasion, the ombudsman also criticized the participation of children in the marches, calling for reflection on the way protests are carried out.

Chande also asked the demonstrators for a better interpretation of the law on demonstrations, pointing out that protests are a legal right, but that they must respect other fundamental rights of citizens.

"We must organize ourselves to exercise our right in the most appropriate way. The demonstrators themselves didn't observe the law, because anyone who wants to take part in a demonstration has to know how to do it," he said.
