Protests over housing rights in Lisbon degenerate into clashes

Protestos pelo direito à habitação em Lisboa degeneram em confrontos

After a peaceful march this Saturday for the right to housing, which was replicated elsewhere in Portugal, the protest in Lisbon ended in clashes.

It seems that the arrest of two demonstrators, who were vandalizing shop windows, degenerated into violence in the Martim Moniz area.

According to RTP and Euro News, thousands of people in Porto, Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra and Viseu called for decent housing conditions and against the lack of access to the rental market in the face of ever-increasing prices.

According to Eurostat, in one year alone (between 2020 and 2021), values increased by an average of 157%.

The protests in Lisbon are now over and the situation that caused confusion in the Martim Moniz area has been brought under control. The two young women who were arrested at the end of the afternoon have now been released.

The demonstration was taking place peacefully, but there was confusion and clashes between demonstrators and police in Martim Moniz.
