The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Tete province used force to disperse protesters on Monday (21), and in that operation shot four citizens, allegedly with lethal "real bullets".
Two of the victims were seriously injured. A woman was hit in the head and another citizen was hit in both lower limbs.
The doctor at the hospital where the wounded were taken said that the woman had to undergo an operation. The bullet had fractured the frontal bone in her head. The fracture had to be cleaned to remove bone fragments.
"As a result of the same injury, he had a traumatic rupture of the eyeball in his right eye, which practically resulted in a loss of vision," he said, quoted by the Success TV.
In the other case, involving a man, the bullet went through his right ankle and lodged in his left leg.
The victim said that when the shots were fired, people sought refuge in his home and that's when a bullet hit him.
The government, through its spokesman Filimão Suaze, said on Tuesday that it was necessary to find out whether the lethal bullets were fired by the police or other opportunists during the protests.
Meanwhile, the PRM in Tete confirmed the four incidents and said that their actions had not resulted in any deaths.
On the other hand, the corporation arrested 75 people for disturbing public order and safety on the roads. "We want them to be held accountable in good time."
