This Friday, the Angolan population is being called to the protest "Stay at home on the 31st" and the counter-protest "I'm going to work on the 31st". The lawyer told DW that "no one should be forced".
Today, Friday (31.03), the "Day 31 Stay Home" protest is taking place in Angola. According to DW, the initiative comes from activist Gangsta and aims to put pressure on the Angolan government to solve the country's social problems.
Angolan society is divided between staying at home or leaving home, although on social media most people believe that on the 31st they should reflect on the country. This is the case of Nádia Longo, who lives in the Angolan capital.
"I have a head, torso and limbs. I reflect, think and feel what's going on in our country. It's an initiative to draw the attention of those in power in Angolan institutions, so I decided to take part in this campaign," she said.
Since 2011, Angolan citizens have been protesting in the streets of Luanda about Angola's governance.
"If all of us Angolans join this campaign en masse, it will attract everyone's attention," added Nádia Longo.
Many Angolan public figures have come out in favor of the protest. These include Paulo Flores and Preto Show. But Yuri da Cunha, for example, is scheduled to perform on March 31.
However, there are those who prefer to take to the streets to earn their daily bread. This is the case of Santos David, a street vendor.
"I have to go out to sell, to do something because I can't go hungry. I have things to cover on Friday. On Friday I have to have a thousand kwanzas to be able to give to the school on Monday," he told DW.
Isaias Kalunga, president of the National Youth Council (CNJ) believes that the country doesn't need to stop on Friday.
A few days ago, the leadership of UNITA, Angola's largest opposition party, encouraged its militants, as citizens, to take part in a protest organized by activists calling on Angolans to stay at home on the 31st of this month.
In a press release, the executive secretary of the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) expressed solidarity with the activists' cause, which aims to protest against the social difficulties that Angolans have faced in recent years.
