Protestsː Tanzanian police issue arrest warrant for opposition leader

Protestosː Polícia da Tanzânia emite mandado de captura para líder da oposição

The Tanzanian authorities today issued an arrest warrant for the secretary-general of the Party of Democracy and Progress, the main opposition figure.

At the origin of this warrant, published on the Tanzanian police's social networks, is John Mnyika's alleged connection to the protests that took place after the October 29 general elections.

According to Amnesty International, the protests have caused at least a hundred deaths.

In addition to John Mnyika, nine other people are included in the arrest warrant, such as the deputy secretary of the Party of Democracy and Progress, Amani Golugwa, and the spokesperson, Brenda Rupia.

The police order comes shortly after Europa Press announced the arrest of 98 people accused of promoting the protests.

According to the international press, in October, in the weeks leading up to the vote, Human Rights Watch and other organizations accused the government of intensifying its repression of the opposition and silencing critics and the media.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan was inaugurated on Monday for a five-year term, after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared her the winner of the elections on Saturday, with 97.66% of the votes, in a vote in which the two main opponents were excluded.

Meanwhile, the African Union Election Observation Mission to the Tanzanian General Elections says it has witnessed clear cases of electoral fraud in which voters have voted more than once.

It should be noted that Hassan became president in 2021 following the sudden death of his predecessor, John Magufuli, whose vice-president he was.
