Angolan teachers may go back on strike over government's failure to comply

Professores angolanos poderão voltar à greve por incumprimento do Governo

Angolan teachers are planning to return to strike action over the government's failure to implement a 12.5% subsidy, which should have been implemented in March, but so far has not been put into effect.

The National Teachers' Union of Angola (Sinprof), Admar Jinguma, guaranteed today that the provincial secretaries will meet in the next few days "to decide on the course of action" in June, "if the subsidy is not paid by the time the May salary is paid".

"We're not going to wait any longer," said Admar Jinguma, quoted by Lusa, stressing that the parties met in December last year and January this year, with the government committing to implementing the new pedagogical innovation allowance of 12.5%, effective immediately in March.

However, according to the Sinprof leader, at the time, the executive team made up of the ministries of Education, Labor and Finance said that the allowance "would be implemented immediately, dispensing with the bureaucratic formalities, which would only be seen 'a posteriori', when it came to changing the remuneration status of education workers."

However, after the decree was approved by the Council of Ministers in April, it still hasn't been published in the Official Gazette, almost a month later.

"We don't understand how the decree that refers to the materialization of a commitment, made at the top of the negotiating table for implementation in March, a commitment made five months ago and so far there is no light on its implementation," he said.
