Chicken production: Maputo reaches food self-sufficiency level

Maputo province has reached the level of food self-sufficiency in chicken production, producing 100,000 tons of this food per year, according to the governor of Maputo province, Júlio Parruque.

According to the government official, Maputo province contributes around 68% of chicken at national level.

Parruque is also quoted by RM as saying that the achievement encourages the province to plan future projects to export chicken produced locally.

"We're in a very extreme position.

Once we have produced enough to feed the province and contribute to feeding the country, naturally there are already initiatives to export our chicken for its quality. We are also fulfilling a great purpose, which is to combat chicken smuggling, which is quite intense in this region," said the governor, who was speaking this Saturday during the first edition of the Meat and Chicken Festival, known as the Matola Nhama & Huku Festival.
