The spokesman for the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) in Maputo city, Leonel Muchina, confirmed the rescue on Thursday of the businessman identified as Muhammad Mayet, who was kidnapped on Wednesday morning in Maputo city.

"This Mozambican, of Asian origin and 45 years old, is already with his family. He would have been rescued only yesterday," said Muchina, referring more details on the matter to the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).

Meanwhile, another source says that the kidnappers learned that the authorities already knew where the captive was and were preparing a raid. They escaped and abandoned the victim at the scene. The victim, realizing that she had been abandoned, escaped and returned to her family on her own.
Muchina said that there were only two cases of kidnapping this week, including an attempt that was thwarted by the police. With regard to a third case, Muchina said that it was not a kidnapping and suggested that it could be a SERNIC police operation.
"What I confirm are the cases I mentioned," he said.
