A British company has built a house out of 18 tons of recycled plastic. The company Affresol has developed a technology that transforms plastic and minerals into a material called Thermo Poly Rock, which could revolutionize the construction industry, reports the BBC, quoted by the portal "greensavers"..
The project, backed by the government and environmental organizations, has already launched a line of green homes and four-ton portable modular buildings. Wales' Economy Secretary, Ieuan Wyn Jones, has stated that "the new sustainable process" has a lot of potential and can generate a lot of jobs.
Affresol says the process has low energy consumption and transforms plastic into a durable, tough material. Director and manager, Ian McPherson, said the new material is light and strong, and is also thermal, waterproof, non-flammable, and will not rot. The Thermo Poly Rock sheets form the supporting walls of the house, which can be covered externally with bricks or stone, while the interior can gain a layer of thermal insulation and get the same appearance as a traditional house. The tiles are also made from recycled material.
The company estimates the useful life of the houses to be about 60 years, but says the Thermo Poly Rock elements can be recycled again at the end of this period. "Every country in the world has a problem with waste and now we have the opportunity to turn this waste into a 100 percent recyclable housing construction resource," McPherson said.
