The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, will meet today in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, with the President, Volodymyr Zelensky, as part of the African Peace Mission..
According to an announcement yesterday by the South African Presidency, Ramaphosa traveled to Warsaw where he met yesterday afternoon with his counterpart Andrzej Duda from Poland, a country that shares borders with Ukraine and Russia.
A statement quoted by Lusa said that Ramaphosa had attended the International Labor Organization summit in Geneva, Switzerland, over the last two days.
"President Ramaphosa is now heading to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, for deliberations tomorrow, as a member of the African Peace Mission, with President Volodymyr Zelensky," the statement said.
The delegation includes the heads of state of South Africa, Zambia, Comoros, Congo Brazzaville, Egypt, Senegal and Uganda, "as representatives of a continent that has felt the adverse economic impact of the conflict".
Meanwhile, Pretoria reported that in recent weeks, President Ramaphosa has held talks with the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, President Zelensky, the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, other leaders of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
The talks focused on efforts to facilitate "a peaceful process for the Ukraine-Russia conflict, in line with South Africa's position as a non-aligned state".
Later today, Ramaphosa will travel to Russia, and the delegation of African heads of state will be received by President Putin on Saturday in St. Petersburg, according to the Presidency of the Republic.
