São Toméan president resigns

Presidente são-tomense demite governo

On Monday, the President of São Tomé dismissed the government headed by Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada and invited Independent Democratic Action (ADI), the party that won the most votes in the previous legislative elections in 2022, to appoint another figure to form the new executive.

According to the foreign press, the resignation of the São Toméan government is due to its "remarkable inability to solve the country's numerous challenges, as well as a lack of strategic cooperation and manifest institutional disloyalty.

"There is a lack of clear strategic cooperation on the part of the Prime Minister and there is also a clear institutional disloyalty, factors that have dulled the institutional relationship that should exist between the President of the Republic and the Government, through the Prime Minister," reads the presidential decree quoted by Voa.

The decree also points to the "frequent and prolonged periods of absence of the Prime Minister and Head of Government from national territory without any visible gains for the state and the people of São Tomé".

According to the Head of State, these trips "result, on the contrary, in unjustifiable expenses for the public purse."
