South Korea's ousted president summoned by investigators

Presidente deposto da Coreia do Sul convocado por investigadores

South Korea's ousted president was summoned by investigators again today, after rejecting a previous request and as part of the failed attempt to impose martial law earlier this month.

Yoon Suk-yeol, 63, was suspended last weekend by members of parliament as part of impeachment proceedings following the declaration of martial law on the night of December 3 to 4 and by the deposed President of South Korea summoned by investigators, according to the international press.

Yoon and the allies involved in the coup run the risk of being sentenced to life imprisonment and, theoretically, even the death penalty, if they are proven guilty of rebellion. Yoon is prohibited from leaving the country.

The former prosecutor is being investigated by the South Korean Public Prosecutor's Office and a joint team of police, defense ministry and anti-corruption investigators.

The hearing at the anti-corruption agency is scheduled for December 25. If Yoon comes forward, he will become the first sitting South Korean president to appear before an investigative body.
