Tanzanian president calls for peace in Mozambique

Presidente da Tanzânia apela à paz em Moçambique

The President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has launched an appeal for peace in Mozambique, at a time when the political tension in the country is intensifying, following the brutal murder of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe in the early hours of last Saturday (19).

In her capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, Samia Hassan acknowledged that the electoral administration bodies were currently finalizing preparations for the official announcement of the results of the presidential, parliamentary and provincial assembly elections on 9 October, suggesting that all stakeholders remain calm until then.

"Following the unfortunate incident of the death of Paulo Guambe, a PODEMOS representative, and Elvis Dias, the party's lawyer, on October 19, SADC calls on the Mozambican law and order authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure that the respective investigation is carried out," said the Tanzanian President, quoted by SADC. Savannah newspaper.

The murder of two citizens supporting the presidential candidacy of Venâncio Mondlane has aggravated the political tension in Mozambique, where peaceful demonstrations initially called to repudiate the less than transparent performance of the electoral bodies in tabulating the results of the elections, were on October 21 transformed by the police into scenes of violence, with the use of tear gas and real bullets. A 25-year-old died after being shot in the head.

To testify to the level of tension, Venâncio Mondlane announced on Tuesday that another demonstration will take place on October 24 and 25, in what will be the second of four waves of demonstrations in Mozambique.

Mondlane warned that each of these demonstrations will be more intense than the other, so tension is likely to increase.
