President of the Republic says Maputo should stop being in the news for the worst reasons

Presidente da República diz que Maputo deve deixar de ser notícia pelos piores motivos

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has appealed to the population of Maputo province, in the south of the country, not to make the news for the worst reasons, and to avoid destroying public and private property under the pretext of protesting against crime or the lack of better living conditions.

The head of state, who was speaking today (29) during the inauguration ceremony of Maputo's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), said that the neutralization of a criminal cannot justify taking the law into one's own hands.

He gave as an example the case of military personnel at the front in Cabo Delgado, who neutralize terrorists and hand them over to the judicial authorities and, in some cases, find them back at the scene of combat because they have been released for alleged lack of evidence.

"I'm not saying not to hold criminals accountable, but we have to know how to take them to where they should be and if the treatment we are given doesn't satisfy us, there are mechanisms to channel the matter to other entities so that an adequate result can be achieved," said the Mozambican statesman.

On Monday (27), people rioted in the town of Manhiça, Maputo province, and set fire to a vehicle belonging to the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), claiming that there had been an increase in crime in recent days.
