United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby predicts that the aviation industry will raise ticket costs due to rising prices for petroleum products.
From his perspective, it is a cause and effect situation, because "higher aviation fuel prices lead to higher ticket prices. And he also considers that his company will not escape this.
In an interview this Tuesday on CNBC, Kirby said that fuel prices are breaking all records. In the case of the aviation sector, it surpassed $2.32 per barrel that day, well above the $2.02 in the fourth quarter of 2019, before the pandemic broke out, or the $2.14 per barrel last quarter of 2021.
For Kirby the biggest concern is the impact of rising prices on aviation's bottom line, and not necessarily the rising price of fuel itself, because "it is normal for prices to go up" due to increased demand.
Nevertheless, the Airlines CEO remains convinced that the scenario will change soon, as oil reserves should increase by the end of the year, and as a result of the easing of travel restrictions in the US.
United Airlines' results should improve as the company expects to reduce costs in 2022 compared to 2019, with the exception of fuel costs.
