The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, appointed Raul Domingos, former leader of Renamo, the main opposition party, as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Holy See, a presidential statement said
Raul Domingos will replace Sérgio Nathú Cabá, who was removed today by the President of the Republic as Mozambique's extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the Holy See, the statement said.
It should be noted that Raúl Domingos was head of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) team in the negotiations with the Frelimo government for the General Peace Agreement, signed in 1992 in Rome.
After the first multiparty elections in Mozambique's history, in 1994, Raúl Domingos headed the bench of the main opposition party in Parliament.
He is the first Mozambican opposition politician to be nominated for the post of ambassador.
Until his appointment, Raul Domingos was an advisor of State to the President of the Republic.
